Have you heard of this site?!
http://www.basebulletinboard.com/aviano411/
Why didn't you tell me?
It lists information about shops, restaurants, employment opportunities, and a heck of a lot more. Seems like a great resource for us. And if you have information, email the folks and ask them to add it to the list.
Awesome!

Excuses Excuses
Well, I've been gone a while. Sorry about that. Lately things have been a little....
We've taken some necessary un-fun trips, some fun unnecessary trips; had guests come and go; birthdays, holidays, and many things that I've probably already forgotten by now.
Lucky for you, though, I've made a resolution to keep up with this little blog better...and drink more water. I don't know how my drinking more water will help you, but hopefully I can become more dedicated to a regular blog schedule. Though blogging will always be at the bottom of a pile of other much higher priorities, I think a little organization will get me back on track.
So if anyone out there is still reading Surviving Aviano....tell me, what information would you like to know about Aviano? Are you curious about housing? School information? Shopping? Food? What do you want to read about?

And way more of this than I felt like was our fair share...

Hey, Cullligan Man!
In the past, the Aviano area has had problems with the Culligan delivery service. It was very unreliable, to put it kindly. Because of that, many customers dropped the service, and newcomers heard about the poor service so they didn't sign up.
If you are interested in having delivery service, you'll be happy to hear that we have a new Culligan Man! The new guy, Robert, is very reliable. He has not missed one of our scheduled deliveries and answers emails and concerns promptly. What a relief!
So if you were turned off by the spotty delivery and iffy service, give them another look. It really has improved tremendously in the past few months.
The Exchange site has the prices for the service and answers most any question you might have. Prices for cooler rental range from about $12-15 per month. Or you can purchase one at the Area 1 Shopette. Or they show up on the Aviano Classifieds all the time. The five-gallon jugs are $7.95 each {fluoridated or not, your choice}. There is a $5 deposit on each delivered jug, but you get that back with each jug you return. So as long as you are doing a 1-for-1 trade, it's irrelevant. They also deliver cases of water bottles in a variety of sizes.
For us, it's one less errand in our busy week. And now that it's reliable, it is such a relief. If you're tired of lugging bottles of water from base to your home every week, Culligan is definitely worth checking out.

{I am of no importance to anyone at Culligan or AAFES. This is solely based on my experience with said service. Take it for what you will.}

Ah Darn It!
These don't work here.
Save yourself the trouble and take my word for it.

At least not on the walls...it scrubs off the "paint". I say "paint" because I don't think the walls are really painted. It seems to be more of a wash over the stone. In any event, these things take it right off, which is really too bad. If your walls have been painted with regular semi-gloss type paint then I'm sure they'll still work just fine for you.
I have used them in small doses, dabbing here and there for small fingerprints and smudges. But if I end up with a large spot, say a footprint on the wall, I don't know how I'm going to deal with that!

Aviano Blogs
I began this blog because it was difficult to get good information about the area before {and even after} we got here. I wanted it to be a place for advice and information about the base and area. After several PCS's over the years, this has been a real tough one for a variety of reasons. I have heard many people express frustration about the base, the area, housing, and Italians! I feel like being well-informed makes everything a little easier. So I thought throwing a little information out there might help.
Fortunately, I have made a couple of local bloggy friends who felt the same way. There are 2 other lovely ladies who also run blogs here at Aviano. The funny thing is I think we could all write about the same thing and you'd get 3 completely different takes on it!
So without further ado, allow me to introduce the adorably funny Ms. Tessa at Ciao, Blogga. A new military spouse who cracks me up with her funny pictures and stories. She definitely has a unique and fresh perspective on the military life and life at Aviano!
The other Aviano blog that you simply must check out is Aviano Dolce Vita. Ah, the sweet life! This blog has links for just about anything in and around our area. She is great at posting all of the local festivals. And there are a LOT of those! A great source to reference for just about any local information.
Do you have an Aviano blog that I could add to my blog roll? Or do you visit another site that has tons of great Aviano info? If so, let me know about it!

If you don't squeal with delight when you see these freshly stocked beauties in the Commissary, I'm afraid we can't be friends any longer.

Hoarders
A piece of advise that I got not long after arriving at Aviano was, "If you see it at the BX or Commissary and think you might need it one day, get it."
I've spent the last 10 years of my life trying to organize, contain, and declutter on a daily basis. It's like raking leaves with the wind blowing, but I refuse to give up. So when I heard this, I did a little chuckle and thought, "This person doesn't know me AT ALL!". I wasn't going to go out and buy up the BX. I just don't do that.
True, this friendly, helpful lady didn't know me at all, but what she did know was Aviano. Turns out she'd been assigned here before and was well into a second assignment at Aviano. She really knows Aviano!
When Thanksgiving rolled around last year and there was no canned pumpkin to be found anywhere, I fully realized the genius in her thinking.
The thing to make sure of is that you keep your receipts. That way, if you decide after a bit that you really didn't actually need all 7 of those cans of pumpkin or every single Pineapple Cilantro Yankee candle on the shelves, you can return them.
The key is finding the fine line between being prepared and ending up on A&E, Monday nights at 9/8C.

Blind as a Bat
I've been asked a few times recently by folks at Aviano about buying glasses here. The Optical Shop in the BX complex has a limited supply and are quite expensive. There are a lot of Ottica shops in and around Aviano. Throw a stone and you'll find one, but again, they are really expensive.
Three of the four people in my home wear glasses. {The fourth had surgery or it would be all four of us!} I don't mind paying a pretty penny for a good pair of lenses. It's worth it! After all what would we do without our eye sight. But, if I can get a good deal and comparable quality, I'm all for it.
Since we've been here, we've been ordering our glasses from Zenni Optical. They have a huge selection! And amazingly low prices.
I was worried about ordering online at first for the obvious reason that I can't try on the glasses. I normally spend about an hour at an eyeglass shop trying on dozens of pairs. Then I go home and think for another several hours before actually ordering. Well you can "try on" the glasses on the site by uploading your picture, lining up your pupils with the guidelines, and then choosing a pair to try on. You can even pull up a few pictures at a time to have a side-by-side comparison.
Nooo, it's not quite the same. There's no way to know if they'll pinch your nose or feel funny on your ears. But I have to tell you, we've ordered 8 pairs now from the site and the "try on" feature was pretty darn accurate. I'll admit that I've gotten 2 flops but they were on the iffy side to begin with. At no more than $20 a pair, it's not been a big loss. Honestly the pair that I like the most were $6.95. What!?! I've paid $300+ on glasses before.
$6, freakin', 95!
One of the "bad" pairs was because I clearly didn't look closely enough at the pictures. What I thought were sort of floral or maybe kind of a tribal-ish design, turned out to be more Luchador-like in person. Allora!
I'll probably wear them anyway.
Maybe to the next Mexican wrestling match that I attend.
